Release Notes ...

Version 4.10 released Sept 6, 2002

This screen contains notes,  and fixes for this release.

Notes

1. In this version, we reorganized the chapters a bit, to make things more clear and easy to find:

We split a new chapter on "Children" out from the "Background Information" chapter.

We renamed the chapter that had the Alimony & Support calculator "What If?" This clarifies the purpose of that chapter, which is a "what if" function. The chapter allows a person who has entered all the other data in detail to easily change alimony and child support numbers and immediately see the impact on the bottom line.

2. Goals and Assumptions. We added a new chapter for "Goals and Assumptions." Now you can:

  • Change the inflation rate, the rate of return on re-invested net income, and the rate at which you have to borrow money in the future.
  • Enter your goals with respect to how much property each party will keep.
  • Set target alimony goals (e.g., enough to break even, or 15% of the spouse's net income).
  • Enter your state's tax rate and method.

3. IRA Distributions. Now it is possible to specify the amount per year you wish to have distributed when you reach the age at which you begin distributions from your IRA. (Previously, we had, for simplicity's sake, simply given you a choice between legal minimum distributions and a fixed distribution of $150,000 per year.)

4. Child Support. We added two more child support options. Now it is possible to say, "Child support will be $500 a month for three years, then $400 a month for five years, then $100 a month for two more years."

Known Problems and Errors

No known problems for this release.

Problems and Errors Fixed

  • Life Insurance Assets. The "assets by category" graph was missing the "Life Insurance" category. We fixed this in release 4.09

  • Interspousal Debt. In the calculation of total assets, if there was debt owed from one party to another in connection with a sale of the home, we were subtracting that debt from the receiving party instead of adding it. We fixed this in release 4.09
