Who We Are...

The two founders of Family Law Software, Inc., Daniel Caine and Wendell Smith, were also partners in the company that developed the critically-acclaimed and best-selling income tax software program "TaxCut."

TaxCut is a 4-time winner of PC Magazine's Editor's Choice award and is now the #2-selling income tax software program in the United States. TaxCut, which debuted in 1988, was the first mass-market income tax software to use the question-and-answer approach to completing a tax return. This approach was widely copied, and today, all popular income tax software uses this approach.

Caine and Smith brought this popular and successful Q&A approach to the Personal Edition of the Family Law Software Financial Advisor. As was the case with tax software in 1988, Family Law Software, which debuted in the year 2000, was the first financial planning software for divorce to use the Q&A approach.

In addition to the question-and-answer innovation, the features most-widely praised in TaxCut were its ability to take complicated issues and present them in plain English, and its ability to organize a complicated process (preparing a tax return) and present it in step by step format.

Both of these features are present in Family Law Software, which offers extensive advice on a wide range of financial issues, presented step by step in plain English.

In 1993, Caine and Smith sold TaxCut to H&R Block, who markets the product today. The founders continued to work for H&R Block on TaxCut until 1996,when they left H&R Block and began work on Family Law Software.

With Family Law Software, they saw an opportunity to apply their skills to help with another situation, the complex problems faced by people who are getting divorced.

Divorce is often the single largest financial transaction of a person's life. It requires people to deal with a formerly-unknown area of the law, and to make difficult decisions involving many financial and tax issues. Yet there was no financial planning software of any kind to assist people through this trying process. And there was very little software for professionals.

Thus, the idea for Family Law Software was born. The goal of the Family Law Software team was (and is) to create software that was truly helpful and at the same time very easy to use. We hope you agree that they have produced software that meets that challenge.
