If You Are Considering A Job If you are a woman and you don't yet have a job, it may be best not to get one until after the divorce. The same goes for going back to school. (Conversely, men are advised to encourage their wives to begin working immediately.) The judge in the custody decision will tend to look at your current relationship to your children. If you get a job or start school, that could hurt your status in the judge's eyes, as you would be perceived as less of a caregiver for your children. Also, if you are currently unemployed, in some cases that will increase the alimony you receive, even if the judge knows you plan to go back to work.
