Desire to be the Custodial Parent
Sometimes, one spouse (often the husband) will ask for custody mainly as a bargaining
chip, to wring concessions in other areas from his wife.
Often, in these cases, the husband is a hard-working man who is ready to begin
a single life of dating. As a practical matter, the hard-working and single life
would not mesh with bearing responsibility for the time-consuming, draining, and
burdensome tasks of raising children on a day-to-day basis.
Judges, who see husbands who ask for custody as a bargaining chip all the time,
usually are able to see right through these requests for custody.
A judge will seriously consider granting custody to a husband only if the husband truly
wants physical custody and can show that he will make the time and has
the resources to be a custodial parent.
