How Should I Interact With My Children?

Here are some things to keep in mind when you are with your children, which will help in your quest for custody:

  • Do not badmouth your spouse.
  • As much as you can manage it, do not lean on your children.
  • Keep your composure in front of them; do not break down in tears, and do not scream in rage or frustration.
  • Be there for them physically as much as reasonably possible.
  • Keep stable routines.
  • Be the "mainstay" parent.
  • Be the parent who the child calls in the middle of the night.
  • Drive the kids around to their activities.
  • Be the parent who helps with their homework.
  • Help with the religious training.
  • Go to school functions and teacher meetings.
  • In general, encourage the child's development and well-being.
  • If you are currently the custodial parent, do not take even a one-week vacation to "find yourself" or "collect yourself." Instead, relax alone or with a few friends at home after the kids have gone to bed. Do not start new outside activities that consume your time.
  • Men who work are often advised to encourage their wives to take time off away from the family. (This is the flip side of the previous point.)
  • Men who work are often advised to assume new day-care roles such as making play dates, planning birthday parties, taking children to the doctors, meeting with teachers, and coaching sports.
  • Men who work are advised to cook for the kids whenever possible.
  • Men are advised that it's not flashy gifts for the children, but extended time covering the basics of life, that matters to a judge.
