Divorce War! 50 Strategies Every Woman Needs to Know to Win

Adams Media Corporation, 224 pages

  • The buzz: This is a book of standard advice mixed in with lowball tactics. It advises the reader, for example, to alternately fawn over her husband and cold-shoulder him, so that he buys her lots of gifts (which she keeps in the divorce), while she is simultaneously pushing him in the direction of wanting a divorce. You want to believe the book is a parody, but you're afraid it's not.
  • The author: The author was at the time of publication a divorce lawyer in Wichita, Kansas.
  • Topics covered: - Finding the best divorce lawyer. - Discovering your husband's income and assets. - Hiding money of your own. - Being unemployed before divorce. - Establishing grounds for custody. - Convincing your husband to divorce you. - Proving things against him. (If he looked at other women, perhaps you can sue him for intentional infliction of emotional distress. "You will certainly be able to find a psychologist who will agree that your husband has damaged you emotionally for life." Page 107) - Proving mental abuse, cruelty, alcoholism, etc. - Tape recordings and private investigators. - Courtroom strategies and conduct.
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Sidenotes: Another suggested tactic is to acquire lots of new credit cards and max them out with purchases of "women's" items, such as clothes and handbags, before the divorce. The judge will let you keep them. After the divorce, you can even return some of the items for cash, if you have not used them.
  • Key insight: Divorce is a dirty game, and only people who play dirty win. (Not everyone would agree with this assessment.)
  • Read if: You are a manipulative unprincipled woman -- or you want to know what a manipulative unprincipled woman would do in your shoes.
