Cultivate Sources of Information

If your husband is hiding assets, there are many people who might know.

Some of these people might be sympathetic to you, or might not know about the impending divorce, or might just be careless.

You can get information in conversations in which you make a casual reference to something related to your main concern and see what happens.

Here are some of the people to consider getting to know better:

  • Your mother-in-law or father-in-law. They may be more sympathetic to you than you know. And some kindness that you show them can go a long way.
  • Your husband's siblings. Sometimes they, too, are in a position to know things about your husband's investments or other activities that you don't know.
  • Your husband's associates. Close business partners know a lot more about your husband's personal life, and financial activities, than you might suspect. Perhaps their wives know as well.
  • Your husband's administrative assistant. In any conversation, listen for give-aways. The assistant might mention an appointment about which you did not know, income of which you were unaware, and so on. Or, the assistant might mention that a project has ended, whereas your husband may have told you that it was continuing.

It helps to "role play" before these conversations. Think what the other person's reaction might be to what you are planning to say.

It also helps to assume that whatever you say in these conversations will be reported back to your husband. The best approach is simply to engage in general conversations that leave the door open for those who know your husband to let information slip out.
