In the Wallerstein Study, Often One Partner Made a Stable Second Marriage.

The Wallerstein study subjects tended to fare unevenly in terms of remarriage. Young people did better than older people. Men remarried sooner and in greater numbers than women.

• Most of the time, only one partner found a stable second marriage.
• At the ten year mark, less than one-third of the men now over 50 were happily remarried.
• At the ten year mark, one-half now over 40 were happily remarried.
• In one in seven divorces, both partners have stable second marriages at the ten-year mark.
• In one fifth of the couples, neither had remarried in ten years.
• Every woman who was 40 or older at the separation was never remarried ten years later.
• About half the men who were over age 40 did not remarry in the ten years after divorce. Those who did not remarry were intensely lonely.
• Half the men who were over 30 at the time of separation were happily married ten years later. Many found wives in the first year. Most of those who remarried found wives within 3 years.
