When Can Child Support Awards Be Modified? Child support awards may typically be modified whenever there is a significant change in circumstances. This usually happens when one party or the other has a big jump or decline in income. (If the payer's income declines voluntarily, that's usually not grounds for a modification.) Some states set a numeric threshold, saying that they will only recalculate child support if the new guideline result differs from the old guideline result by, say, 10% or more.
